Siri.

The 500D and the 7D are worlds apart... The 7D is a different beast... Dual digic 4 processors, 19mp, HD video (30, 25 and 24p) - It's in a different league both specification and price wise to the 500D... Then there's the 5DMk2... It has only one processor and is a bit slower, with a slightly higher megapixel count (insignificant difference) ...The 5DMk2 is a full frame camera (you should research the difference between full and crop sensor cameras) the 5DMk2 does the same HD video, has less focus points and is more expensive again...

The 10-22 is an EF-S lens, it will only fit on the 500D and the 7D - it will not fit on the 5DMk2 (without modifications that make your camera warranty void) The 10-22 is not an "all round lens" - I had one and loved it, but as I've moved to FULL frame in the 5DMk2 (which is stunning by the way) I can't use it any more.

Can I tell you what to buy? No... You need to hold the cameras, use them in a shop, side by side... work out how much money you have... MAKE SURE you get a decent'ish lens - an expensive camera with a cheap lens is a cheap camera. What would I say would work fine "all around" well - the 24-105L is a nice lens, but then the 17-85EF-S is OK for a couple of years, too... it's all down to budget.

If you need any more advice (I've not really given you any) you can find me in the forums...

I have a (off topic) question for SIME: I read your article about Canon EOS 500D and your comments there, so i was hoping that you could give me some guidance on choosing a camera and lens. (I'm thinking about the Canon EOS 7D as I have the impression that it is better than the 5D markII and that the 500D will not be good enough...)

What i am interested in is the 'movie like' video function, plus taking amazing landscape photos. So i have been thinking i should get the Canon 10-22mm lens (only. - I will only get one lens for the first year) - but does this lens work well with the EOS 7D (for shooting landscape photos and 'movie like' video)? Or is there another lens you could recommend me for these specific purposes? I'm not a professional photographer - will i really manage this camera and get 'movie like' results with the 7D? Hoping for a reply... Thank you!

That's cool! So I could put a torch to it underwater and it would be fine?

It's only 500GB though... my photos and edits take up 750GB. I have 5 years of work! They should've given you more space. :)
