Wide Angle: Weekly Photography Challenge
This week your photography challenge is to take a share a picture with the widest focal length available to you.
For some this will mean using their point and shoot at it’s widest setting, for others it’ll be fixing a zoom lens to your camera and using the widest focal length on it and for others it might mean attaching a wide angle prime lens or even a fisheye lens and shooting with that.
A few posts that might help you tackle the challenge include:
- Using Wide Angle Lens Distortion Creatively
- 17 Amazing Wide Angle Images
- 6 Winning Ways to Work Wide
- How to Get the Best Results from Ultra-Wide Lenses
- Wide, Wider, Widest – Wide Angle Photography
Your image can be of any subject matter – portraits, landscapes, sports, wildlife…. whatever you like.
Once you’ve taken your “Wide Angle” image, upload it to your favourite photo sharing site and either share a link to it below or embed it in the comments using the our new tool to do so. Please note it sometimes takes us a while to approve comments with images as there’s a moderation queue – particularly over the weekend.
If you tag your photo on Flickr, Twitter or other sites with Tagging tag it as #DPSWIDE to help others find it. Linking back to this page might also help others know what you’re doing so that they can share in the fun.

Hello,
These are pictures of the 4th oldest city in Brazil, São Cristovão (Saint Christopher). It is in Sergipe, the state where I live. It´s a place that´s rich both in architecture and scenery for photographers.
I took these two pictures with my Sony DT11-18mm at 11mm both and a Sony Alpha A330.
This square is candidate to becoming Patrimony of Humanity (UNESCO).
Happy photographing everybody.

Hi guys,
If you have observed Veni Oliveros photograph of the Grand Mosque, Abu Dhabi, both the minars seem to be slightly inclined towards inside. Similar inclination / tilting is observed in my photographs of other monuments. I am also assuming that for a panorama picture, this tilting makes it difficult to stich photos. How do we avoid the pitfalls ?

Hi Madhav,
Regarding your question about the “tilting inwards” of the monument, it’s simply because the camera was tilted upwards to get the top of the building in the shot. Any time the camera is tilted upward, you will get “converging verticals” like that. There are three primary ways around the problem:
1) Use a very wide angle lens and point it straight ahead (do not tilt upwards). The lens has to be wide enough to capture the top of the building while the camera is still pointed straight ahead and level. If this results in too much unwanted foreground, you can crop the excess foreground from the final image.
2) Stand farther away and use a telephoto lens. Generally, you need to tilt upward when you are standing somewhat close to the building. When you’re farther away, this tilting upward can become less necessary. You just need to use a more telephoto lens (or zoom in) to compensate for the fact that you’re standing farther away.
3) Use a tilt / shift lens (also called a perspective control lens). These lenses, the staple of architectural photographers, allow you to keep the camera pointed straight ahead, while the lens adjusts in a way that the tops of the buildings are still in the frame. Since the camera is level, the verticals stay straight.
Alternatively, you can attempt to correct the converging verticals in software, although this can degrade the image quality as you are effectively stretching and altering the image. A particular program that excels at this type of correction is DxO Optics.
Hope that helps…
Best regards,

As I was finishing up with evening chores..I was rewarded with this pastoral scene at twilight…Our horses peacefully grazing, a beautiful evening sky, our Border Collie keeping watch, and my husband’s beloved garden. My 14 year old son gave me a cheap fisheye lens for Christmas and the fun it has brought has been worth every little penny.
