I have the Canon 50 1.4 and my sister has the 1.8, and I have to say, there isn't really any comparison. The 1.4 is a lot better. Build construction is way better, and though the 1.8 takes a very quality picture, my 1.4 shoots sharper with better bokeh and improved contrast and saturation. Sure it costs 4x as much, but four times a starting $80 is still pretty cheap for a lens of such quality. At 1.4 it is a little soft, but by 2.2 the sharpness is all there. Also, focusing the 1.4 is much faster and considerably more accurate, particularly in low light. The increased aperture allows it to hunt less when focusing and generally come out more accurate (which is important if you haven't stopped down because the dof is so small at 1.4.

I've played around with the 1.2 before, and I can't see needing to upgrade to it ever. On everything but the price the differences between the 1.8 and 1.4 exceed those between the 1.2 and 1.4.

How is Canon 50 mm macro for portraits in comparison to the other Canon 50mm lenses? I own a 100 mm macro which gives amazing portraits except that I have to run far away from my subject :)

The Nikkor 50mm 1.8D lens is great, but I think only for Nikon bodies D90 and under. I used the 50mm 1.8D on a Nikon D80 and loved the performance, but once I got a Nikon D300, the lens produced lower quality images (much less sharp, harder to get good focus).

How can you take this comparison seriously when it does not include the f1.4 Canon or Nikon lenses. Thats like comparing mid-size cars and leaving out the Honda Accord or Toyota Camry.

When I was a Nikon shooter in 35mm, I loved the Nikkor 85mm f1.4. absolutly my all time favorite lens. Now that I shoot Canon "c" digital format, I shoot with the Sigma 50mm f1.4. It is absolutley the closest I've ever used to the Nikkor.

Isn't there a Mid range 50mm for Canon around 320.00? I'd like a review on that one because the cheaper
50mm is getting mixed reviews mostly because of it's poor construction.

I recently bought the Nikkor 50 mm f/1.4 with high expectations after reading all the rave reviews. Yes I'm very happy with the DOF, bokeh and low light performance but I'm dismayed by its sharpness .. of lack of it to be exact. What do others here who have this lens think of its sharpness?

Before the 50 f/1.4, I had been using the 55mm f/3.5 micro-Nikkor for macro as well as normal-distance shoots, and I wonder whether I have been spoiled by its razor-sharp sharpness?

I have the Nikkor 50mm 1.8. Great price to start. A little light in weight, but that's a given. The quality of the pictures is, to me, phenomenal. I really like using this lens and enjoy the DOF that it provides. I get great shots all the time.

One should not forget that the LEICA Summicron, not to mention Summilux APO Asph., Lens are the Paragon Lenses to which all other lenses have been or should of have been measured.
Though, 50mm. Lens is typically not as seen as Portrait one, but also could be called envinronmental portrait lens.
Cheerz,
