What Percentage of Our Readers Use a DSLR as their Primary Camera? [Poll Results]
Over the last month or so we ran a poll here on dPS asking readers what type of camera they use as their primary digital camera.
After just on 50,000 responses the results are in – and they’re pretty conclusive – here at dPS people certainly like their DSLRs.

Of course dPS has a fairly ‘enthusiast’ type audience so I wouldn’t claim that this is an accurate reflection of the total percentage of DSLR users going around today – but it certainly shows a shift towards DSLRs in our community (and beyond).

Euhm, I use a micro four thirds dslr. In which section does that put me?

A micro Four thirds can’t be a dSLR: There’s no mirror by definition. Ergo, not a dSLR.

DSLR owner circa 6/29/2009 and I haven’t picked up a point and shoot since.
I laugh when occasionally a family member wants to take a quick shot and asks me “where’s the picture, how do you make it show up on the screen.” I have to admit, at the time, I didn’t know how to switch to live view. As a novice and enthusiast, I’m still learning about my camera, Canon’s T1i.
However, since I bought the camera, I have moved away from framing shots using the LCD.
Although after that occurence, I know how to switch it, but owning a dslr makes you look at photography differently and that’s only one of the joys and benefits of owning a dslr, you have to think about your shot, not just point and shot.

There is no space here for Leica Rangefinder M’s or my Leica X1- compact with larger sensor than 4/3. I’m sure there are others that were left out too.

There is no such thing as a micro four thirds DSLR, but you could have a Four Thirds DSLR (Olympus make four thirds DSLR’s, like the Olympus E-620 )that or micro four thirds interchangeable Len’s camera.

I didn’t see this poll, but I would have been torn between my DSLR and my awful phone camera, which is obviously with me a lot more. It’s a bit sad that the latter wasn’t in the survey.

I think it’s mostly a reflection of the site audience – people on a photography site are serious (if not professional) photographers, and such people tend to have want a good versatile camera, something that can take photos both far away and close up. I use an ultra-zoom myself (cheaper and simpler), but I’m not at all surprised that the vast majority favor a DSLR…

Wow, the difference is clear. Even though i tend to see people with more point and shoot cams , DSLR’s are the standard no doubt. Still confused which DSLR to go for Canon 550D(Rebel t2i) or Sony Alpha 550, advice needed please.

I gave up all the heavy gear and multi-lenses of my DSLR and happily use a Canon G9–I’ll not go back for anything!

So disappointing. Every time I see such polls i get so disappointed…I use a P&S Canon SD780 IS. I’m happy with it but I think I need more than just P&S. Unfortunately, I can’t afford a DSLR now

You should have added mobile. I am a serious shooter and I seriously shoot with my iPhone a lot.

Mine is the Leica M8 (digital rangefinder). Not sure where that fits in the poll, as it isn’t a dSLR, P&S or M4/3 camera…

Recount! With all Leicas pretty much excluded I think there should be a recount.

I have a Pentax film camera, bought a Pentax dSLR as the lenses were interchangable, but like #1AcePhotographer – I use nothing else but my Canon G11. My husband still carts around all the lenses for the dSLR but the G11 does everything that I need – and fits in my bag and goes everywhere with me.

I’ve used a P&S for years and was already trying too get something more than just get your avarage family photos. When my P&S got, win or loss stolen I took the chance to buy a Nikon D40. Today I still enjoy my DSLR, so my purchase was rectified.
Also I’m an “IT guy” so that too pushes me a bit too explore todays technologies.
