Hands down, Canon 24-70 f2.8 L series. I now have 4 L series lens and there is not one that has disappointed me, but the 24-70 is my "go to" lens. I have the 17-40 f4L, 70-200L non-IS and the 100-400 f4.5-5.6. One thing about the Canon L series lens.......they spoil you. Once you use them, you won't be satisfied with anything less.

I want to purchase a 650-1300 mm lens for my wife who is an avid amateur photographer, but I don't know which lens of this magnitude is the best one in the market for the price. Need Help Christmas is close and I want to get her this as a present.

My favorite lens is the Nikon 12-24 AFS f4. At f8 and above this thing is sharp from 2 ft in front of you to the horizon. It's not a bad walking around lens either as it acts like a 18-35 on my D200.

Nikon 24-120. Older model. Not my sharpest at the extremes but very convenient.

My Canon EF70-200 f4 L IS Would have liked the 2.8 version but couldn't afford it. The reason for buying the one I have is that I wanted a piece of top quality professional gear so that I could prove to myself that my crappy images are my own fault not the lens and thus strive to improve my technique. Now I need to carry my tripod with me and not just hope the image stabilisation will always be 'good enough'.!
My Canon 50mm 1.8 is also a favorite for carrying around street markets and the like. And what a bargain that was at $85. .Sure, it's plasticky but the lens gives me all the sharpness and quality I need.
