Wow this is very surprising considering Jpeg is a very ‘lossy’ format. I always save the original as raw and the edited as Tiff just because I know they won’t lose any pixelation that way.

How can it be that RAW isn’t part of the poll?

What I wanted to add: I use Bibble 5, which saves all edits in a sidecar file next to the original photo. This means that I can save my edits and my RAW (well, CR2) file as “the final product”.

Me three – why on earrth was RAW not a choice? And don’t tell me that’s what “other” was for.

RAW and DNG fall into the something else category since they weren’t listed in the original survey. I think JPG probably got the most votes because after processing a RAW photo it’s usually exported as a JPG.

I never save a file in .jpg unless it’s going to be used on a website or sent via email. All my files start out as RAW and are saved as PSD after the editing. I also never get rid of the original RAW file, in essence saving a backup of the original.

I shoot RAW, then convert to DNG when importing into LR. If I post to flickr, I export to JPG

I have both a psd, raw & jpg version of all my edited photo’s …

RAW and DNG. I only export to JPG for email, and web.

I’m really surprised by the results of this poll. My clients would scream if I delivered JPEGs to their art departments.

For those of you asking where the “RAW” option is, you should read the original post. It explains the intent of the poll and why RAW was not listed.

When does a photo become a photo?
I can’t print a RAW file, I can’t publish it on the web. So ( store my data as .nef and .xcf but my photos are stored as .jpg or .tif.

Digital negative.

I always shoot in RAW, and after editing I always do a “Save As” in Tiff or PSD. I never use Jpeg unless I’m sending a low-quality image via email or uploading to Flickr. I like to preserve all of my layers and every pixel in case I want to come back to the image later and do some additional editing. Can’t do that very well if it was saved in Jpeg. I also never work on the original RAW file – only a copy – so my original RAW’s are still available for possible future use.

ugh. i didn’t vote…i don’t know why, must have missed it. but i shoot in RAW and save in TIFF to prevent any loss of quality. Do most people know that JPEG loses quality (unless it’s the final image)… Especially if there is ANY retouching or cropping afterward?
Perhaps someone should write a column on quality loss in JPEGs if it’s not the final image. No, not me…not a writer…
