TEXTURES: Weekly Photography Challenge
This week your photography challenge is to take and share a photo on the them of ‘textures’. The theme was suggested on our Facebook page by Kirsten Thompson.
Feel free to interpret it in any way that you wish.
You might like to take a Post Production approach to the theme and play with adding some textures to images that you’ve taken in Photoshop or you might like to actually capture some real life textures in some of the images you take over the next few days.
Here are some tutorials that might be useful depending which approach you take:
- Using Light to Create Texture in Your Photography
- How to Use Textures in Photoshop to Enhance Your Photos
- 10 Tips for Shooting Graphic Textures
- How to Create Your own Textures
Once you’ve taken your “Texture” image, upload it to your favourite photo sharing site and either share a link to it below or embed it in the comments using the our new tool to do so. Please note it sometimes takes us a while to approve comments with images as there’s a moderation queue – particularly over the weekend.
If you tag your photo on Flickr, Twitter or other sites with Tagging tag it as #DPSTEXTURE to help others find it. Linking back to this page might also help others know what you’re doing so that they can share in the fun.

From a recent trip to Nebraska for stormchasing…came away with a shot of this tree and merged it with a texture.

Used a bokeh texture, which i took when it was raining the whole day and night, to spice up the portrait(my World Cup profile pic) and also did some displacement in photoshop(is that considered using texture?

I was able to find this beautiful sea shell in the Virgin Islands, by law you are not allowed to take any shell off the islands, so I decided to give this little guy a photo shoot. I simply put it on some reflective glass and used the natural light around me. The texture of this beautiful shell is stunning, every dot, perfectly aligned, just amazing.

Dragonflies, like most animals and insects, are tricky. They aren’t very cooperative. I prefer to photograph them in a more natural setting, but this beauty on the concrete sidewalk seemed perfect for the texture theme.

While at playground with daughter, I found a lot of texture in the mulch. Not really that exciting, but I kinda liked the chaos of the mixture, patterns, shapes, and sizes.

Got my Rebel T2i with Canon ES-F 15-85mm lens yesterday, and this morning I spotted this leaf in my backyard. Handheld shot about 9:00am. About 15 inches from focal plane. So far, my best shot of the day!

I decided to go the post-processing route with these. My apologies for the cruddiness. I’m still a newbie!
Used the exact same processing on all four of these photos, and I never even noticed the ant in one of them. It was a nice little surprise when I uploaded them.

I couldn’t decide, so here are a couple . . .
two are from the same plant – something that looks like a rhubarb on steroids, and two from the side of the DeYoung museum in San francisco. Enjoy.
You will probably need to unzip the file. Hope I did this right . . .

Here is a pict of a stem and pod from a plant I found in San Francisco. It looked like a rhubarb on steroids. I found another one in the botanical gardens, but that one was from Africa. Variety of plant – your guess is as good as mine. The second picture is from the side of the DeYoung musem.

kgrafixlynn@att.net, on Flickr” rel=”nofollow”>I hope this shows up. I think the hardest part of the weekend challenge is trying to figure out how to upload the photo.
This is a photo of a stem and a seed pod of a large leafed plant – looks like a rhubarb on steroids and I believe it is from Africa. If you check the other posts, you will see the leaf close up, and also 2 views of the siding from the DeYoung Museum in San Francisco. . . . all interesting posts!
