I'd suggest Hugin (http://panospace,wordpress.com or hugin.sourceforge.net) works great and it's free.

After having used PTAssembler for a few years I only recently discovered that shift-clicking the 'auto create' button on screen one (after loading the images) will align them.

So just carry out the first part of step one above...load images, then shift-click auto create.

The latest version of PTA comes with Tufuse which can be invoked to blend the stack.

Dave: The idea was not having to use CS3 (I am still on CS2 since I don't want to fork out that much money again).

You can also take a few shots and then use the Auto Align tool in CS3. Vary the exposure, lock in the aperature and then take two shots. Mask and blend to taste.

Another nice trick is to set your camera to "Auto-Bracketing" and "Rapid shooting". It works perfectly on my Canon Rebel. I keep pressing the button and it take the three pictures with only a fraction of a second between each them. It's limit a lot the camera mouvement.
