Shoot Your Own Aerial Video with a DSLR [Don't try this at Home Kids]
Do you have a DSLR that shoots video and are not sure how to push it to it’s potential? Why not strap it to a remote control helicopter and take your DSLR to new heights!
Note: dPS will take no responsibility to damage to your dSLR if you choose to give this a go. Blame the team at Heli Video Productions for that!

We were doing this- for the first time actually- back in the early 90′s.

16 & 35mm cameras on a 35 lb custom made helicopter with a 6 ft. rotor span. Almost earned an Oscar but we were beat by a competitor who (cough) adjusted (cough) the dates of HIS system. Oh well, we had fun anyway. Looks like Eric know how to fly as well as shoot.

I’ve seen the video multiple times — that’s one awesome setup. I’d love to have one but I’m sure it’s pretty darned expensive. I’d use one with my Canon D10 but not my 7D

If anyone is interested in R/C helicopters and their use in aerial photography and videography, there is a forum dedicated to this on the community site, HeliFreak:

A company that makes turn-key helicopters for this purpose is Bergen RC:

Look for the models named “Observer”. They range from an electric model for $2100 all the way up to a turbine powered model for around $10k

Wish I had the confidence to strap my $4000 camera/lens combo to something like that. I seem to struggle with focus on my DLSR for video. How do you maintain focus when flying near an object, then moving out to more of a panorama?

There’s no way I would try this with my 7D however I have a XT at home I might give this a whirl with. Oh wait,… no video there.

I wonder how many Duck Taped Air Hogs it would take to lift my camera?………

Sure looks cool but wouldn’t a p&s or a camcorder work just as well? The fact that you can’t control DoF on an airborne DSLR makes using it for video rather irrelevant, doesn’t it? Besides, why risk a $1600 camera when a $500 camcorder would probably get you better results?
Just my $0.02.

Does that come in super telephoto?

Wouldn’t it be cheaper to pay for a helicopter or balloon ride and take your camera with you?

Made my adrenalin pop!
Tried a small “heli” to get the feel of remote
hmmm didn’t put out enough $$$ to get the results…
My hat is blown off with the skill of pilot and camera!
Glad to see it and again the juices were flowing… a senior photographer!
