Amazing photos... I cant imagine the precarious positions you must have been in to get some of those shots. But anyways, very well written and informative article.

Great article! I know it's nice to have more than the traditional "butt "shots after climbing!

Great article. I have been a climber for a number of years and increasingly getting into photography. In the past as a climber I find it difficult to give up a day climbing to photograph my friends. This year however (now i have a DSLR) I will be concentrating on photography.

The thing I love about climbing (apart from the challenge) is the fact it gets you to places you would not otherwise get to. It it was not climbing I would not have gone to 6,200m in Nepal. I would not have been to Kalymnos, the alps or fontainebleau. I do agree that bouldering is a good place to start and that safety should be the number one consideration.

I have a put some of my climbing photos taken over the years on flickr http://www.flickr.com/photos/richw2k2/collections/72157606852197924/ although they are nowhere near as good as Kamil's

Just two words more on the matter: safety and commitment.

As a former climbing teacher, I'd like to stress that you always must play it safe. Under no circumstances should you risk your own life and the safety of all the people involved in your shot.

Next, I would suggest to study and review the work of past mountain photographers also: as an example, I would now remember Galen Rowell's work. It is a great source for learning better photography and let your interest in climbing and nature grow even more.

I have only rock climbed a few times in my life, and all those times I was just concerned with not dying. It's hard for me to imagine bringing my precious D300 into such a situation!

However, bringing one's photography skills into other areas is definitely a cool idea and I am very glad there are people like Peter going out there making these shots as I love to look at them and feel they offer more inspiration and motivation than other sport photographs.

I learned about rock climbing photography at the Red Rock Rendezvous which is put on by Mountain Gear each year in Las Vegas. One of the clinics is a Rock Climbing Photography workshop taught by world class climbers and world class photographers who have been published in all of the major climbing magazines. If your interested I highly recommend it. You get a great climbing clinic with a photo workshop all rolled up and you learn about important things like RAAD systems which make it much easier and safer than sport climbing to get a shot.
