RECREATE A FAMOUS PORTRAIT: Weekend Photography Challenge

This weekend your photography challenge is to recreate a famous portrait.
You might like to choose a famous photograph portrait or a painting (or even a sculpture) – but the key is to identify one and see what you can do to recreate it. Feel free to be a little creative with the task and to take either a serious or humorous approach – the main thing is that you’re playing with your camera and hopefully learning to use it better!
Once you’ve taken your photos – choose your best 1-2, upload them to your favourite photo sharing site either share a link to them even better – embed them in the comments using the our new tool to do so.
If you tag your photos on Flickr, Twitter or other sites with Tagging tag them as #DPSFAMOUS to help others find them. Linking back to this page might also help others know what you’re doing so that they can share in the fun.
I can’t wait to see your portraits and hope you have a lot of fun with this weekend’s challenge!

Funny timing of this post. I set out to recreate a famous Ansel Adams shot this summer but I wanted to put my own twist on it.
Here is a portrait inclusion with Ansel’s famous Snake River (Grand Teton National Park) as a backdrop. (Also tagged in flickr with #DPSFAMOUS

January 9th, 2010 at 9:21 am
What’s the third picture from?
January 9th, 2010 at 9:41 am
Annie Leibovitz
It was taken of John Lennon hours before he was killed.
January 9th, 2010 at 9:46 am
@sui
Pretty sure it’#s Annie Leibovitz, cover of rolling stone. It was taken on the day John Lennon died.
January 9th, 2010 at 9:48 am
The 3rd pic is John Lennon & Yoko Ono (I think…pretty sure).
January 9th, 2010 at 11:56 am
Correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe it’s the cover of rolling stone with John Lennon and Yoko Ono.
January 9th, 2010 at 12:04 pm
Sui, the third picture shows Yoko Ono and John Lennon.
January 9th, 2010 at 12:14 pm
This is great! Please post these weekend challenges often. Thank You.
January 9th, 2010 at 1:04 pm
@sui the 3rd picture is a picture of Yoko and John shot by Annie Leibovitz. Annie has a book that talks all about that specific picture. Annie Leibovitz has some amazing work. I strongly encourage everyone to check it out. She was kinda like the David Lachapelle of her time(without the vivid colors). Really shocking and amazing work.
January 9th, 2010 at 2:45 pm
The third one on the top line is the famous John and Yoko Rolling Stone magazine cover from January 22 1981 – it was taken by Annie Leibovitz on the day he was shot.

My photo (link to a larger sized version of the photo on Flickr) is based upon the painting ‘Mother Berthe Holding Her Baby’ by Mary Cassatt.
By the way, there is a Russian lifestyle magazine called Karavan Istoria that takes this assignment to extremes each month and is always a pleasure to see what they were able to (re)create. If you have any friends in Russia, see if you can get them to send you a few copies.

The interesting thing for me about all this is that you can create the “look” but not the “feel”. Is it due to the person being photographed? Could we have a photo that doesn’t approximate the “look” but evokes the “feel”?
January 17th, 2010 at 10:18 pm
John, so what of this shot, the eyes of the Afgan Girl, not trying to re-create a look here, but for some this is the fun part of the challenge along with taking the photo, don’t you think? Cheers
