Well, I can immediately narrow the list to 2:
Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8 IS II USM
or
Canon EF 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM
Now, choosing between those 2, I'd go with the 28-300 for the focal length flexibility it provides.

I only have one lens and it is the Canon 24mm f2.8 on my Canon 60D. This lens equals to 38mm on a full frame camera. So for me, my all time favorite lens is with a 35mm focal length. I really enjoy simplicity that's why I only have one lens. I mainly do street photography and the 35mm equivalent lets me capture more of the scene.

I've loved my Evolt Camera and its lenses -- but I've wished that I didn't have carry my two Olympus lenses with me when I was going to be taking images at both shorter and longer focal lengths. Having received the Olympus Zuiko 18mm-180mm ultra zoom lens (which is the equivalent of 35mm-350mm) as a present this Christmas, I no longer have to. This lightweight all-digital lens, made especially for the Olympus four thirds system, receives very sharp, very colorful, distortion-free images. Its weight is a little heavier than either of the two separate lenses that came with the camera and it's not quite as fast a lens.

I use a Leica M9 so I would pick as the most versatile Noctilux-M 50 mm. Probable the best for a combination of street and portrait photography. With choice restricted to fixed lens except for the Tri-Elmar-M 16-18-21 mm. It makes my choice very simple. The Noctilux-M 50 mm is probable the best lens ever made.

If price is not the limitation, it would definitely be the new unreleased Canon 200-400 F4L IS USM with built in 1.4 tele convertor. :) I wish i could have it someday.

Let's say the IRS decides I cannot deal money anymore as of now. Then I'd have to do with what I already own. In this case - due to all debts and expenses afterwards - I'd need to say good-bye to my other lenses, and keep only my current Tokina 16-50mm f2.8 AF lens for APS-C size Nikon sensors. I understand I'd have to travel longer to reach certain images up closer, but it is better to use the wide-angle this lens provides than to reinvent Physics by using tele-lenses or even a prime.
