The full Auto mode and the "Scene" modes will get you well on the way. Once you're happy snapping with those (and understanding what they do for you) will then get you started with the Aperture, Shutter Speed and other option. When I'm "shooting from the hip" with the S90, it's what I'll use. If I have a few more moments to spare, then I'll set it up the way I want.
