I bought one of these resently and is not happy with the resolution I am getting scanning 35mm colour slides and the colour balance is also out on many. I scanned at 4800dpi TIFF files and evaluate then in PS. How do you access the manual mode or am I doing something wrong? What manual setting work best? I scanned the slides still in its frames. I would appreciate some help please

Joel, are you SURE you have a Canon 5600F? I'm trying to make a decision on buying this and I really want something that can scan at least ONE frame of 120 film. If there's an EPSON scanner that will do this decently for around 100 Euro, I may be sold. C.

I like the review. I might buy one of these soon...
For OCR scanning, an OCR compatible software should be used (and supported in Mac platform). Abby FineReader is my favorite, but is also quite expensive.

How do you perform an OCR scan? I have tried it..and just get a jpeg. Totally useless. (I am on a mac with snow leopard..that may be part of the problem...)

Thanks in advance...

I've got either this or similar model - pretty sure it's this though. I like it a lot for the film scanning but the auto settings don't seem to pick up vignette photos that well: either cropping incorrectly or sometimes skipping entirely. It took a while to find the manual settings but now I'm extra happy.

@kim quanzon: Mine came with 3 holders: for 120, slide and 35.

Great review....

Currently I'm in the process of scanning hundreds of old prints with a Canon 5010c document scanner and it's proving painstakingly difficult. I thought that this would do the job thoroughly and quickly as it can process 50 sheets a minute; but a lot of the scans only produce a partial image, but I think that this has to do with the glossy paper.

I've scoured the web trying to work out if this is a software or hardware problem or at least can I find settings for the scanner to deal with scanning photos, but as of yet nothing.

After this review (especially interested in the multiple image scans) I may just invest in one of these flatbeds....

I love my Canon Canoscan. I have come to find it to be a very resourceful tool in my digital darkroom. I have so much creative control with my film now. I can shoot, scan and produce almost anything I can digitally. These scanners are just as good as the dedicated scanners that Nikon and Epson make. It was worth every penny invested.
