Update: Just purchased (at Costco) a Nikon D5000 DSLR kit with a mid-range 18-55mm VR lens and 55-200mm telephoto VR lens. Already had a new tripod and was able to use the Sky clear filters I had on the older Canon AE-1 film camera. Took lots of shots over the last week on a getaway to the Oregon coast and Portland, OR to attend our youngest granddaughter's 4th birthday. So far, the D5000 is a very nicely equipped DSLR.

I am but not for myself. I need to get my daughter a new point and shoot camera. I just got a Rebel XSi a month or so ago so I'm pretty happy with that for now.

I was planning to buy a Nikon D90 (upgrading from the D70S). Around Christmas time I priced quite a few suppliers and the best price was around £569.00. I thought I would wait to the january sales or later to see if there might be a bargain about. I'm dtill waiting - - - prices have leaped by around £100.00
I'm now being qouted £679.00, but until Nikons prices drop, I will hold on to my money or reluctantly consider changing to another brand name i.e. Canon

I upgraded to a a350 a year ago, mated it with the 18 - 55, 55 - 200, 70 - 300 lenses and HVL F56M Flash. The flexibility of this configuration is amazing and the robustness of the camera is well suited to conditions in Africa. I will probably not upgrade/change within the next 3 years, depending on the lure of new technology as I am a techno freak.

Dear Readers

I started using SLR camera at the beginning of 2009 with the purchase of a PENTAX 200D at a bargain price of $600 Australian dollars from OFFICE WORKS. It has a Sigma 18-55 mm lens ( as a KIT pack ). I enjoyed using the camera for 8 months now and it takes great pictures. I have been using SLR film cameras since 1975 owning Rollei, Canon, Pentax, some Nikons. I was lucky always because none of these new cameras gave me any problems at all. The reason I bought a digital SLR is because Kodak has stopped processing Kodakhrome slide films for a while and I resort to digital cmpact cameras. One thing I discovered is that more pixels does'nt mean better pictures ( its sharper or better resolution but poorer quality in terms of textures - less smooth ). So megapixels must be synchronised with size and type of sensors and the size of print you want. The Pentax 200D has everything you need for photography ( if you are not worried about lack of live view, low frame rate, AA size batteries ). Apart from that the photos came out extremely well. Professional results are possible by honing your skills and experimentation with raw, enhancing and editing in Photoshop, using HDR software etc. I am not ready to upgrade at all until the full size sensor ( 35 mm ) becomes affordable in future. What you want a camera for is to have fun - any entry level SLR today will be able to provide hours of fun, experimentation and fiddling around trying to produce professional results. You don't need fps speeds, live view, overlarge screens, huge tele lens etc. Those are for people who make a living out of photography and when the employing firm pays for the gear. For amateurs the more challeging and limitation of the gear the better unless you are the yuppy lineage who loved to brag about the gear you have and love buying or upgrading every few months on you mobile, ipod etc. Have fun with the camera you can afford and treat it as a challenge to manipulate the hardware and software you possess. Go to photographic forum to learn new ways of improving your photography. Take care, be gentle and cool and have fun with your camera and tripod. Who cares its a Canon, Nikon, Sony, Olympus or Pentax because they are not too different at the same price range in the entry level. If you think of buying a $5000 camera then its a different matter.

I'm very pleased with my 40D, which I've had for about 19 months. I'm so pleased, in fact, that I bought a second one as a backup a couple of months ago. I doubt I'll be replacing them anytime soon.
