I use Lightroom as well as Elements 6 (PC) and I must say I prefer Elements for organizing family photos. For everything else I use Lightroom/Photoshop.
I like some features on Elements which aren’t available in lightroom that makes it better for family photos. For example you can set location (on map) for your photos, browse photos in calendar view, you have more sharing options etc.

Lightroom is really great. I love it If I am only post-processing my shoots, I even prefer Lightroom over Photoshop. Just my biased opinion.

Or you could just buy Adobe’s Lightroom :]
Try it out. Far better than elements, in my biased opinion. Free trial version is available at their website.

I use PSE 6 on my PC as I didn’t want to wait for PSE6 for my Mac. I’ll be picking this up when it comes out.
