@Ilan - I also use a P&S, but want to upgrade due to technical limitations of the camera (including that it's less easy to add filters etc.). Remember that your art is not mine and vice versa. Different forms of art require different tools otherwise we were all still hand painting cave walls.

I'm looking to upgrade from my D50 to something like a D90 which shoots HD video. However, the main factor is price. There's no rush to upgrade for me, so the D90 would have to fall to what I paid for the D50 and that's around $600 (kit).

I was one who voted for 6-12 months but found a great deal and bought a new camera a couple of weeks ago. I bought into five year old technology because it was a great camera and a great deal. So many people think five year old technology makes it a paperweight but I challenge anyone to find the differences between my "old" camera and my "new" camera without looking at the EXIF.

I voted not in the next year, and probably not for a few years honestly. I'm simply happy with my camera even if it isn't the latest anymore.

That said to say its entirely not about the gear is a tad silly. For example Ilan you have two cameras, why not one? That doesn't sound like using the camera's disadvantages to your advantage to me.

By all means go out and take photos, but if you are failing to achieve what you want to do, step back and check if its your technique that needs work, or whether your gear is simply incapable. I used a kit lens for a while and realised it was simply too slow for what I wanted to do, so I got a new lens and now its all peachy. I can take the photos I want to take.

I agree that some seem to think that new gear is the solution to everything, but at the same time there are some things that can't be achieved without more specialised gear and if you want to do those things you'll need to buy up.

I'm not sure how to react to these numbers.
People 'run' after the latest technology, but so many fail to understand that ART (and photography is art) got nothing to do with equipment.
About a year ago I sold all my lenses except one. I use a wide lens, a simple camera and a small P&S. Everything else, is just a "background noise"

For example - this photos - http://www.ilanbresler.com/2009/08/sunscreen.html - was taken with a P&S. It's small, it comfortable. Not bulky. Hidden.

Stop thinking about the gear, just go out and take photos. Use the disadvantages of the camera to you advantage!

I don't think I'd draw the same conclusion from this poll as you. Instead, all one can draw from this is that the majority of individuals who took part is this poll plan on buying a camera within the next 12 months. I don't think the results imply that "the majority of people will be buying in the next 12 months." It's probably nitpicking but there is a difference. Maybe you assumed that your statement implied the same thing. Don't know.
