53 Weekly Themes For Your 2011 Project 365
Then end of one year brings the promise of something new in the one ahead. Last year DPS challenged you to start a Project 365, or Photo A Day, in 2010. We’re doing the same for 2011 and we’d love to know your plans!
As a helpful suggestion, I have complied a spreadsheet for those needing some structure or looking for advice. The sheet is available here for download in Excel format (Project 365 Calendar). It contains a list of 52 different themes, one for each week of 2011, to aid your creativity if you get stuck. By no means is anyone required to complete this assignment exactly as written because a Project 365 should be about what interests you. It’s merely meant to help keep the motivation up when it starts to wane (around week two).
I’ve also included a column for each day of the week for those planners out there who want to list it all out. It’s also a great way to capture future image ideas and reference them later. Need further help in staying motivated? Jim Goldstein has a post here on DPS just for you; 11 Tips to Succeed with a Photo365 Project.
To recap the post from last year, “What is a Project365? While they can take many forms depending on your hobbies, for photography’s sake it’s the simple act of taking a picture every day for a year. Many people will then post the photos on their blog, Flickr, Picasa Web Albums or just send them to friends. The format of presenting is not the important part of the project, although it can become a very useful way to keep committed to the project.”
Now then, here is a link to the spreadsheet and below is the list itself for those wanting to adapt it to their own note keeping method. I tried to pick subject matter that did not require much, if any, travel far from home. It may take some creativity to caputure a few of the subjects, but you are a photographer, you are creative by nature! Have a great time shooting in 2011
Note: You will notice the spreadsheet starts on January 1st. That ‘week’ only counts for January 1st and 2nd. After those dates, the calendar assumes the weeks start on Monday.

Hey, I read this blog daily, and love the tips. I just wanted to contribute, so I am making a calendar with the weekly themes for other readers to subscribe to.

You can subscribe using most calendar applications. (I am on April.. now, but I should be done in a bit)
Thank you again for the great post!

Peter, an interesting list you’ve compiled here! I find many 365 or 52 projects to be limiting due to the specifics of the subject – sometimes I just can’t get “there” from “here”. I may give this a whirl, though in a cut down 52 version rather than 365.
Here’s a New Years “Macro” (though taken in December

As someone looking to expand on my photog hobby this will give me a good place to start!!
Thanks!

These are great ideas! I am going to put them in my diary to remind me to do this each week.
However, as some of these themes are based on American calendar dates, I will probably swap the Mother theme on May 02 for the UK Mothering Sunday week of March 28. Though “fools” doesn’t quite work in May..!

Completed my first 365 photo inspiration project for the year 2010.
Have already started year two!
It’s a photo a day with a related scripture, quote, lyric – however it comes together this year.
It was a great way to stay motivated last year – and am excited to do it again this year!
January 2nd, 2011 at 4:26 pm
Just finished my 365 from 2010. I sure could have used these last year!! I am going to save it though. I’m thinking of doing a 52 project this year, but I think I’ll start in February. Thanks for the list!
January 2nd, 2011 at 4:53 pm
I love this idea! I’m not sure how many of the themes I’ll actually use, but I’ve saved the spreadsheet for when I’m running short on motivation.

I just finished my 2010 Project 365 – here’s a retrospective post summarizing some of what I learned both in photography and some best practices for the project itself. P365 is a huge commitment, but I for one found it to be tremendously rewarding and well worth it.

I am not hot on a picture a day but I love the thought of a picture a week – once I have mastered that, I can look towards a picture a day next year…I just don’t want this to turn into a chore for me rather than fun.
The list is fantastic and will help me to get out of my comfort zone and stop using the “auto” mechanism all the time
January 2nd, 2011 at 7:50 pm
I am on year two of a 365 project so thanks for the ideas. I decided t take all my pictures with a little horse – I am not sure if that makes it easier or more difficult.

January 3rd, 2011 at 6:04 am
I toyed with doing a 365 but decided it’s just not going to work with my schedule. But I *certainly* need to get more regular with my shooting. Thanks for all the great ideas!
January 3rd, 2011 at 6:06 am
I have decidd to be less ambitious this year and do P52 ( one great shot a weeK, rather than daily) as I fuond last year it started to become a chore to shoot everyday and thats not Y i wanted to do it. This list will be great for inspiration when I’m lagging or have a mental block. Thanks heaps. xo

January 3rd, 2011 at 7:17 am
I’ll be starting my project this week. although instead of photo a day I will make it Photo a week since I wont be able to take a photograph on a daily basis due to work restraints. Anyway I hope everyone’s project will be a success.
Good luck to all and Happy New Year

Cheers for the new start!

I have done this project for the two years and it has become a habit. I will try your subject one, with one exception, i have changed father with spice to fit austalian father’s day in September
January 3rd, 2011 at 11:54 am
Is there a Flickr pool for these? That would help.
January 3rd, 2011 at 12:01 pm
I’ve just started my 365 days project.
I’m aware that it’s a tough challenge, but I have to admit I’m pretty excited about it. Thank you for all the tips and guides. Feel free to give me feedback on my pictures and share any tips you might find useful.

I’ve just completed Project365 based on your inspiring post last year. I’ll be having a rest – as will my camera – then I’ll be starting another project. The Project52 sounds appealing and the weekly topics will come in handy.

The 365 project is one of the New Year’s Resolution. I just wish I can pull this one off until the end. Thanks for this list because I so needed them. This will be reference.
I survived two days already, so cheers to 362 more days.
January 3rd, 2011 at 5:37 pm
I did this in 2009. I’m going to do it again this year. But I’ll have to start today and go through Jan. 3, 2012. You can see my 2009 pics here: http://meandalvis365.blogspot.com/
I had a lot of fun with it, even though I missed a few days. My goal this year is not to miss any. In 2009 I think I got some really good images, several mediocre ones, and a few that just blew. One of my objectives was to document life, not necessarily to create great images. Hopefully this year I can focus more on the artistic aspect.
I’m also planning on doing 100 Strangers this year (or however long it takes).

January 4th, 2011 at 4:34 am
This is great! Thanks for the themes!! I am too busy for a 365 day challenge…so I will most likely be doing a 52 week change and stick to a photo a week (but a really really really good one, hopefully) .

This is my first day of the Photo a Day 365 project. It also doubles as this weeks ‘cold’ theme. However, for some reason this photo strikes me as ‘warm-cold’. The photo has a horizontal division line separating the frozen water below and the tunnel light above. Somehow it is also a dividing line between warm tones and cool tones. I’m not sure how that happened, but I have a 3 part question………is this a ‘technically’ good photo, a ‘technically’ and ‘creatively’ good photo, both or neither?

I’ve been wanting to do a 365 project for years… 4 days down, so far so good =) The weekly themes definitely made it less intimidating to think of being creative every single day. Here’s where I’m doing it: 365byRUE.blogspot.com

This is the first time I am joining this project. I will do my best to take a picture a day and I really hope it helps me with the quality of my pictures.
I do have a question — aside from posting the picture on my blog, is there a place where I’m to show that I’m participating in this on this website? Like a place to link to or something?
THANKS! I look forward to learning from you in the coming year!

I am looking for a spot to place all my P365 photos in one place, for critique, entertainment, comments, whatever. I couldnt find a place (other then a blog website) pertaining to this particular list. Are other people following it? and where are they placing the photos to be collectively viewed? If we are going to post it on flickr, can we come across a tag mechanism so we can all tag them with the same keywords?

I am attempting my first 365 this year with a Dictionary theme. All of my pictures, well after 3 days, are visual interpretations of dictionary definitions. It’s shameless self-promotion, but my photos are at the link below if you want to check it out:

I have just started a project, not a 365, just lasting 16 weeks (at the moment, may extend). I put 16 themes into a hat and every Monday I draw out one to pursue for the week, so I can’t plan some shots well in advance.
I’m uploading one photo a day to flickr based on the theme
http://www.flickr.com/photos/paddyk7/
Currently 4 days into week 1, the theme is light (haven’t been to liberal with it though). Loving it so far!!

I am assuming that http://www.365project.org is not this project… I thot it was until today.

I did a similar challenge last year, 2010 Photo Challenge: http://larimieleigh.com/2010-photo-challenge/ Instead of taking a picture everyday I took one for the week. It keep me active with my photography but didn’t become over whelming. I plan to do another photo challenge this year, details coming soon! http://www.larimieleigh.com
January 15th, 2011 at 7:08 am
Many thanks, I have started my 2011 365 project and already getting invitations to present about it by year end, the pressure is already up!
One of the challenges I face is when I am running out of time left for the day and have no subjects to shoot. This theme sheet will help with some last minute ideas as I don’t like to stick to a fixed theme even for a week, for me each day has to have a new challenge for me
Please do visit my site and hope you enjoy following my project. Your kind words are what will keep me going and your critiques will be what will make me better!
Fareed.

What a great idea!!!
Only started last Monday, so have my first week done. Lasted 3 days before I started running out of idea’s but I figure that’s the idea – to force me to get out.
Anyway…you can check out my effort here: http://www.michaelkalman.net
Love the idea of the weekly themes, even if it;s just to give me a bit of a starting point.

Completed my 365 day Project for 2010 and wanted to do something similar for 2011 but not a picture a day again. A friend and I came up with something a little different. We have set up a separate Facebook account and are each going to post two photos a week based on a theme. We have invited all our friends to vote by clicking on the “like” button of the photo they think best captures the theme for the week (they can’t tell who took which photo). As an added incentive, I am keeping a spreadsheet of the people who vote each week and we are going to award the one with the most weeks voted every quarter with a framed print of their choice. We’ve just completed week one and we already have almost 200 friends. The comments are great and people really seem to be enjoying it..

My first post!
Hi. Well, I just tried the macro setting with reversing my lens. MAN that was difficult to stay steady and hold it against the body of my camera!
Although I enjoy the florals which are perfect for macro photography, I wanted to do something more unique. So, I grabbed a vintage stage ring I use when I’m performing, and set it up for the shot. Let me know if this is what “macro” really is, as I’m still learning, THANKS!

I love this list of themes! I am doing a project 365 and am finding it may get rather “boring” to have a picture of my kids every day. I need to switch it up a bit, and this is a great list to get me thinking!

Thank you so much for this post and the list! I’m on my third year of Project 365 on my blog, and I’ve been seriously struggling for inspiration. It got bad enough that I found myself only taking one or two photos a week, and my enthusiasm just wasn’t there.
Your list has inspired me, though, because it provides themes without them being too narrow. I’ve just completed taking the last photo in my first theme, Breakfast. Thank you!

I am keeping up with these themes with at least one picture a week on the theme. I would like to find a place to post these for critique and share other members’ work. Can we tag them on flickr a specific way for others to find? can we post it on a blog site somewhere? I just dont know how else to expand them out for critique.
If you have any ideas, please share.

Thank you for this theme list!
A few of us started a private group on facebook this year and we post up our daily pictures so the others in the group can comment and provide feedback. This does a few things:
* We limited it to friends of friends – this creates a dinner party atmosphere that everyone knows everyone else through someone else that is there. Keeps people from being obnoxious.
* Keeps us shooting every day.
* Allows for feedback in a very controlled group that people can take well.
It’s been going great and in just a few weeks my non portrait photography has improved by magnitudes – because of (1) The feedback each day on things I can think of next, (2) The other great stuff I am seeing in our group is done by people that I know and that pushes me to try harder.
But without this post and list I’d be nowhere
so thank you!

Is there anyway I can get into that facebook group? You can remove me later if you consider anything as misbehaviour. I am looking for a like minded environment where a few of us are working on the same project each week and I can learn from their work. I dont mean to be a prude and this is going to exclusively for learning and criticism. I would like to learn how they are taking their pictures and post mine. Here on DPS, everybody is doing their own thing and its not a ‘group’ feeling.
Please if you dont mind, I would like to join the group and share my (at most 3) weekly assignments. I am trying to do at least 1 picture a week on the subject and not 7.

To have the feeling of “group” I have been searching for followers on my blog, It has given me some results, we are all doing our P365 in some different ways but since some of us are following the Topics, It is nice to compare our ideas and inspiration shown in the pictures.
@salman shaf _ If it is one a day or one per week, I would be glad to take a look on yours so I will suggest you to publish your link
@everybody.
I would like to choose one of each set of 7 pictures, so if you can guive me some feed back on which one you like the most, it would be great.
Here is mine.

This list is excellent and really allowing me to focus. Due to family commitments I’m only doing 1 a week but this gives me extra time to create the vision.

I am a little late on this Project 352 this year. It is my first time doing it. A few of my friends have been trying to talk me into it for a couple years and now that I am not working or in school (had a baby) I figure it is something to do when he is napping.
My Project 365
I would appreciate feedback on the images, there is nothing like constructive criticism when looking to improve! I just don’t have a DSLR, just my point-and shoot. I include the exif info even though there isn’t anything I play with my camera in relation to that.
Thanks for checking out my blog and offering help when and if you can!

I bought a DSLR for the first time last year and thought a Project 365 would be the perfect way to learn it and hone my photography style. 5 months into the project, I am loving it! You can find my project here:

I just bought a DSLR, Sony Nex-5c, and just found this website this week.
This Project 365 sounds like fun.

Has the calendar been updated for 2012? Can the calendar be made so the list recurs annually? Thanks.
February 21st, 2012 at 8:56 pm
@Jeff I will sugest follow it again, and then you can also compare the pictures you take from one year to the next one.
I am trying to select one of my pictures of each week, to select the best of each topic.
If anyone of you have time to review them and select 1 out of every set of 7 ( week ) I will appreciate your coments.
I am willing to print them out in a little 52Pictures Booklet.
See you later!
