Dogs Dogs Dogs. Earlier today a friend asked me for some ideas on how to photograph her Dog. I did point her to our How to Photograph Pets tutorial but also thought it might be useful to pull together a few Dog Photographs to give her a little extra inspiration. Here’s some of what I came across.

All these photos are superb when you come to test quality, light, sharpness and many time ‘cuteness’ .
However, I think, that except the photo by kimrose, all are pretty much ‘cliche’ (some more, some less).
Here is a photo I took – http://www.ilanbresler.com/2008/07/great-minds.html – It’s not a “dog portrait” per se, but I do use a dog for it. Bit more of on a street photography side maybe
November 3rd, 2009 at 12:51 am
Just realized I have few more dogs photos which are not necessarily on the ‘cute’ side – http://www.ilanbresler.com/2009/05/what.html and – http://www.ilanbresler.com/2008/06/neighbours.html – All are street related, less portrait maybe…

All of the photos are lovely, but the first thought I had as I was looking at them was of an I Love Lucy episode of the 1950s. Lucy makes Ricky promise that he isn’t going to show the Applebys any pictures of Little Ricky when they come to visit that evening, but when Steve and Carolyn arrive, the first thing they do is whip out a handful of pictures of Little Stevie; an argument ensues over who is the cutest baby and the best photographer.
The episode is hilarious, and so are these photos; because we all think that our photos of Fifi or Fido are the best.

Very inspirational!
Great photos all around.
November 3rd, 2009 at 2:13 am
I have to admit that after looking at the first few photos I completely forgot what I was looking for. All of the photos are stunning and very well composed. I enjoyed just looking at the different “expressions” that the photographers have captured with the animals. Never mind how it was done. The beauty of each shot was just so …
I have to view them again for any critiquing, but for now I’ll just smile and enjoy the show!!!
@ ilan Bresler: Nice shot! The poster of the pooch entices one to be naughty in an abstract kind of way. It is funny to look at, yet the pooch has a point. “Great Shape”.

I hope everyone who loves animals remembers the humane society and rescue groups when they go shopping for pets.

Technically-good shots, most of them. Inspirational? Not so much. As someone else pointed out, most are clichés and/or posed; the personality rarely shines through… Kiwi, MommaMia, and “pixie led” were among those that seemed to have allowed the dog’s inner being to shine, and it shows in their photos (though the shots are very similar in nature).
Without personality, it’s simply a headshot. Take shots that show their individual souls…

All great., but the first one I keep going back to.
I noticed all but 3 were taken at doggy level. Seems to make a big difference.

Well, very nice dog portraits. Here I’ve a question is that how do you take a photo of a pet that will walk when it see you with a camera.

very nice photographs of dogs…. I usually shoot cats (if I see one and I’m with a camera, I’ll shoot), but I have done shooting some dogs (very few) and one of my favorites (after heavy treatment on lightroom) is http://www.flickr.com/photos/gp-sachs/3903134559/in/set-72157622315837637/
thanks for posting this one, and I’m waiting for the ‘cats’ gallery….

What wonderful shots! I want our pet children professionally photographed now. I especially love the one that says, “Image by mommamia.” So cute!
November 3rd, 2009 at 10:10 pm
There are some sensational photos here. I particularly love the look of the “formal” portraits, complete with background lighting! How did these people get their dogs to sit still long enough? I have 2 dogs, and it’s like they’re both on speed! Super fast shutter??
November 4th, 2009 at 1:07 am
Stunning and amazing photographs. The photographers have really captured the essence of the dogs. Their eyes say it all. Quite moving.
I particularly like the one of the puppy with the leaf in it’s mouth by mommania. So playful and hopeful.

I’m a bit disappointed at the “inspirational” selection provided in the article… it isn’t, much. However, many of the comments and links that responders have left ARE, so I guess it came around to inspiration after all.

*DOG PHOTOGRAPHY WARNING*
Can I please warn all readers of this article that using ringflash on dogs/animals (and children under the age of 7 or so) is VERY DANGEROUS and harmful to their eyes!
I just hope that joshuahoffmanphoto had his on a very, very low setting but unfortunately it looks like it was quite close up.
Other than that great work on these photos. I love the jumping one!

I’ve really enjoyed the photos and have gotten a lot of ideas for the next time I photograph animals. A friend asked me to do their holiday photos with their pets. 5 yorkies and a kitty. I feel that I can capture more unique photos now. I am inspired !
I do have a question.. How do I put my name on all of my images ? Can I do it at once or do I have to do it individually ?

I’m loving the photo with the dog and his human jumping.
I’m so glad to have found this. I’ll be visiting my mom next week and ever since all of us kids have moved from home, her dog has become her best friend. Recently her dog, Jesse, has been sick and she was worried that he might not live long. I’ve made it my personal mission to get some really great photos of Jesse while I’m there and framing them for her. I’ve read the tutorial, not I have some really great shots in mind.
THANKS!!

Beautiful pictures, just a shame that most of the dogs are from breeds that possess terrible genetic related diseases and have to suffer so much only for “our” amusement

Recently I was asked to photograph a couple of dogs for one of our local Police Offiers. they are large breed dogs, I thought about using a backdrop to capture the perosnality of the dogs in a formal way. How do you maintane order on the set with large k nines. Ralph

Hello
I’m wondering if you can tell me the minimum speeds to freeze a dog running or to freeze a dog jumping up to grab something from their owner in mid air?

Hi
Love the shots here! We found an Aussie waiting patiently for Dad to come back from a Dive off Catalina Island in California….no leash, just patience and self control!

The shot of poodles bearing their teeth reminded me of one of my favorite comments by a stand-up – ” I think there ought to be a hunting season for poodles”. They are truly rediculous. Let’s focus on real dogs…

These are excellent, every one of them. Thanks for posting!
Ilan, you have to be kidding (at least I hope you are kidding). These images are NOT cliche. They are very well done and executed, and at least 1/2 dozen of them are quite unique (the little newborn in the palm of the hand, the two poodles both baring their fangs at the same time, the guy and his dog under the street lights, etc.). Don’t put down other peoples’ great work because it’s different from yours.
Your images are well done, too — all 3 of them. Sincere kudos. But the first one isn’t even a photo of a dog at all. It’s a photo of a very nice looking woman’s body in a bikini juxtaposed against a poster with a dog photo in it. Very cool
and very well executed, but not a photo of a dog. The one in the alley is a normal black and white street photo of some people who happen to have a few dogs.
The third one, with the dog in one window looking across at the guy in another window – now that one is cool, and is definitely unique
Peace, my friend.

I think the first image is one of the cutest images I’ve ever seen – animal or human
I could write a paragraph about each of the images in this great collection, but I won’t
Just suffice it to say it’s a great collection!! I also enjoyed all the images uploaded here by responders to this thread, some very creative eyes did them

Doxens always seem to be a popular subject of pet photography. This shot is one of my favorites. It took about 30 minutes and lots of dog treats. The whole thing was very Pavlovian!
