I'm in the process of selling my Canon ef 50 F/1.8 mk II to replace it with a Canon EF 28 F/1.8 to do just this what the story is. I'm with a XSI and a 7D. the 50's field of view was limiting me on this because of the 1.6x crop factor. Good article!
